ICM | Painting with my Camera
After years of learning and loving photography I sometimes found myself to be disenchanted with my art. I live in the beautiful country of New Zealand with its spectacular landscapes, beaches and vistas, yet often nothing excited me any more.
The iconic photographs had all been taken over and over again and it was clear I had become jaded.
When I discovered Intentional Movement Photography, also known as ICM. Immediately I was hooked by the potential for creating abstracts and 'impressionista' style photographs of nature and my surroundings. Using my camera to paint pictures.
I became inspired to learn and master the variety of techniques needed to achieve these wonderfully abstract photographs that I was thrilled to hang on my walls, from pan blurs to impressionistic artforms.

Autumn Fire
Can you believe this is ‘just a tree’ in my back garden? It is a very beautiful tree, a Dogwood of some sort. It greets the spring with a mass of beautiful creamy white flowers, offers great shade during the hot summer months and then catches fire in the Autumn! The leaves gradually turn from green to orange to red. The addition of some dancing with my camera created an artistic impression of the tree at its finest.

For me. this image captures the energy and power of the ocean. As I look at it, I can almost feel the force and hear the crescendo of the wave as it crashes to the shore. Taken at Lake Ferry, New Zealand

Driving on the beach at sunset
Diving on the beach here in New Zealand is a thing. My jury is out to be honest, as to whether or not this is a good thing. I suppose as always, if people play by the rules and use common sense then all is well… The image here was taken well after sunset using ICM. It was only when I got home and viewed it on my monitor that i noticed the distant lights of a car driving along in the distance.

Lake Horowhenua is a great place for stunning sunsets despite the prevalence of sandflies and goose poo! The ICM technique used here softens the scene and brings me to image the lake is on fire as the sun goes down

Wave Explosion at Lake Ferry
Lake Ferry is one of the southern most beaches of the North Island of New Zealand. Head directly south and the next stop is Antarctica. The water is bracing, to say the least, and the waves are full of energy as they crash onto the black beach. What a place. Wild and free.
The Distant Tree Line at the Manawatu Estuary, Foxton
The Manawatu Estuary at Foxton, New Zealand never fails to please me. The river is wide, leading out to the ocean. A Mecca for fishing and fun water sports. This image was taken using ICM techniques, looking across the flowing river to the trees and ranges beyond. I love the muted colours with the sky reflecting the colour of the water.

ICM really is like a box of chocolates… you never know what you’re going to get. This image, taken at Lake Ferry, New Zealand, appeared to turn the ocean to molten gold as the sun went down.
